(see www.wolfmittag.com/docs/teudogar_whats_new.php for details)
All files of the Demo Version of 'Teudogar and the Alliance with Rome' are comprised in a single self-extracting installer file, about 6 MB in size, named 'tdogr105.exe'.
(With the Full Version, there are some additional .Dat files, and the installation file is called 'teudogar_full_version_1of3.exe'.)
When you execute this file, a convenient installation program will be started, which will lead you through the installation step-by-step.
Windows XP or Vista or NT: To install the game under these operating systems, you need administrator rights, i.e., you need to be entitled to install software. If you aren't, ask your system administrator to do the installation for you.
When you have installed the game, simply start it with your Windows Start menu.
Alternatively, open the folder you have installed the game to, and execute 'teudogar.exe'.
UPDATE (DEMO VERSION).
You can update your installed Demo Version by downloading and installing the latest Demo Version from www.wolfmittag.com/download.
Your existing version will be automatically detected and updated. Of course, all of your saved games will remain available, and you can continue to use them.
UPDATE (FULL VERSION).
The Full Version that you can download after placing your order will always be the very latest available version.
If later on any corrections or improvements are made, we will make update-patches available on www.wolfmittag.com/download/updates.php: Using these, you will be able to update older Full Versions into the latest version.
Your existing version will be automatically detected and updated. Of course, all of your saved games will remain available, and you can continue to use them.
Open your Windows Start menu, open the program group 'Teudogar and the Alliance with Rome', and select 'Un-Install Teudogar'. (Or open your Start menu, start the Control Panel, select Software, mark 'Teudogar and the Alliance with Rome' in the selection list, and select 'Remove'.)
Windows XP or Vista or NT: You need administrator rights for the deinstallation, i.e., you need to be entitled to uninstall software. If you aren't, ask your system administrator to do the deinstallation for you.
During the deinstallation you will be asked if you also want to remove your saved games. If you keep them, you can re-use them when you install the game again at a later time.
4.1. PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS
You can fix most problems by changing settings in the Options Menu. To reach the Options Menu, simply press 'O' or the F4 key during the game. Or go to Main Menu, and select 'Options'. Now you can adjust control, sound, graphics or language according to your preferences.
SCREEN FLICKERING DURING DIALOGUES
(SCREEN BECOMES BLACK FOR FRACTION OF A SECOND):
Some graphics cards seem to be unable to handle reading from the Video-RAM without interrupting graphics display. (During dialogues, the game reads from VRAM in order to shade the background.)
Go to Options Menu (press 'O'), submenu 'Graphics', and select 'Background for Dialog-Text': 'black' (instead of 'shade'). Then this problem shouldn't occur anymore.
SLOW, JERKY SCROLLING:
GAME HALTS AND PAUSES DURING SCROLLING:
- If there isn't enough free memory, Windows moves data to the hard disk - and loads it from there as soon as it is needed. That can cause small pauses, leading to jerky scrolling. As a first step, close all other programs to enable the game to use the entire memory and processor capacity for itself.
- If necessary, turn off features via the Options Menu / Memory Use until the game scrolls smoothly. (If that doesn't bring improvement, turn these features on again.)
- On some PCs the transfer of a lot of small graphics within the Video-RAM seems to be slower than from RAM to Video-RAM. Under Options / Graphics and Scrolling, try setting 'Graphics Data' to 'all in RAM'. (If that doesn't bring improvement, set this to 'all in VRAM' again.)
- On some PCs, continuous output of sound seems to slow down graphics output. Under Options / Sound and Music, try setting 'Output' to 'only when necessary'. (Though this may result in slight crackling noises when sound effects are played.)
- If nothing else helps, select a rougher scrolling rate under Options / Graphics and Scrolling: Instead of many small steps, scrolling will then be done in fewer larger steps, which looks less smooth but is faster.
SLOW, 'STICKY' GRAPHICS DISPLAY DURING DIALOGUES:
During dialogs, the game graphics are shaded to make the text easier to read. On some PCs, that may take too long. In such a case, under Options / Graphics and Scrolling, select 'Dialogues Text Background': 'none' or 'black' instead of 'shade'.
UNPLEASANT, JERKY TURNING OVER OF PAGES WHEN READING TEXT:
You can turn off this animation under Options / Graphics and Scrolling / 'Turning over pages'.
GRAPHIC-MODE COULDN'T BE INITIALIZED:
1) If other programs using DirectX are currently running on your system, this may prevent this game from getting the exclusive mode DirectX access it needs. Try closing all other programs before starting this game (especially all other games, and programs with graphical user interfaces that might also be using DirectX).
2) This game requires DirectX (Version 1.0 or later). Usually, DirectX-drivers are already installed together with Windows by default. If they aren't installed on your PC, you can download them for free under www.microsoft.com.
3) If these drivers are installed on your system, make sure the drivers as well as your graphics card support a screen resolution of 640x480 with 256 colors.
NO ANIMATION OF PLAYER OR OTHER PERSONS:
INCORRECT DISPLAY OF PERSONS' EQUIPMENT:
NO MUSIC OR SOUND EFFECTS:
If there's a lack of free memory, the program automatically deactivates some or all of these features. Under Options / Memory Use you can manually choose which features are to remain deactivated and which aren't. (Also read the paragraph 'Lack of Free RAM')
LACK OF FREE RAM:
PC WITH ONLY 16 MB RAM:
This game can run on PCs with only 16 MB RAM. When it finds insufficient free RAM, it deactivates some features automatically, e.g. the special animation of your game character during fast running, or the displaying of persons with exactly the armor they are wearing.
- Under Options / Memory Use you can manually choose which features are to be deactivated and which aren't. (E.g. you may want the graphics of all persons to be completely animated, but care less for sound or music: Then turn off the sound and turn on the animation.)
- When there is not much free RAM, very often data will be briefly stored on the hard disk. This will significantly slow down the game. If your PC has only 16 MB RAM, make sure to off a number of features under Options / Memory Use in order to ensure a tolerably smooth gameplay.
- If the game runs too slowly, try turning off as many features as necessary. (If that doesn't bring improvement, turn them on again.)
GAME DISPLAYS NONSENSICAL GRAPHIC TILES:
Some very old graphics cards or not completely DirectX-compatible drivers seem to have difficulties to store larger amounts of graphics data within the VRAM.
Under Options / Graphics, set 'Graphics Data' from 'VRAM' to 'RAM' until the problem no longer appears. Unfortunately, the game will now run more slowly, so you may have to select a rougher scrolling rate as well.
BLACK SCREEN DURING PROGRAM START:
On some PCs, sometimes the initialization of graphics mode and loading of graphics data seem to fail: The game runs, but doesn't display anything.
Fix: Press Alt+Tab or Ctrl+Esc to return to the Windows desktop, then return to the game by pressing Alt+Tab again or by clicking on its field in the task bar. On your return to the game, graphics mode will be automatically re-initialized and graphics data reloaded: Graphics output now ought to be successful.
If that doesn't work, please leave the game by pressing Alt+X or Alt+F4, and re-start it.
'CORRUPTED OR MISSING FILES':
Try re-installing the game (your saved games will be preserved). (Before installing, make sure there is sufficient free space on your hard drive.)
If you still get this message after installation, the program version you've got is corrupted or incomplete. Please download a new version (www.wolfmittag.com/download), and install it (your saved games will be preserved).
'ONLY ONE INSTANCE OF THIS PROGRAM MAY BE RUN AT A TIME':
This game can't be run multiple times at once. Close all instances by clicking with your right mouse button on all running instances of Teudogar listed on your task-bar, and selecting close. Then you should be able to start the game as usual.
If that doesn't work, please restart your system: Then you should be able to start the game as usual.
LOADING OF CUSTOM PLAYER FACES:
This game creates a folder "C:\My Documents\Teudogar and the Alliance with Rome.sav" (or. "C:\Documents\Teudogar and the Alliance with Rome.sav" or "My Documents\Teudogar and the Alliance with Rome.sav" or "C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\Teudogar and the Alliance with Rome.sav" etc., depending on what version of Windows you are using).
In this folder you'll find a file called "Photo.Bmp". To load your own photo into the game, simply place it into the empty boxes in this file.
Exit the game and return to Windows before making any changes to Photo.Bmp (i.e., really exit the program with Alt+X, and not just briefly leave it using Alt+Tab).
If you'd like to deactivate your custom face and use the default face again, exit the program, and delete the files Photo.Bmp and Photo.Dat in your Teudogar and the Alliance with Rome.sav-folder.
COLOR PALETTE MESSED UP:
Windows Explorer (when displaying files as thumbnails) and other programs may cause this problem.
Press Alt+Tab to briefly leave the game. Close all programs that are currently running, except for Teudogar.
When done, return to the game by again using Alt+Tab.
WALKING IS TOO FAST, MAKING CONTROL DIFFICULT:
Go to Options Menu, press the 'W'-key, and then go to the submenu 'Graphics' (while still keeping 'W' pressed).
Now chose a greater value for 'Delay / Walking' in order to slow down walking speed. (Default values are 11 for walking and 24 for standing.) (This option is available from version 1.01.)
SAVING AND LOADING YOUR GAME STATUS TAKES TOO LONG:
You can avoid this by selecting Options Menu / Language and Control / Compress Saved Games: OFF. With this setting, in future saved games the entire data will be written without data compression. That will cost more hard disc space, but will also be much faster.
PROBLEMS OR ERRORS NOT LISTED HERE:
The author isn't aware of any other errors or incompatibilities. But if the game doesn't run, try starting it without sound and music:
Keep the shift-key pressed while you're starting the game. When you're asked if you want to turn off all optional features, answer 'yes'. (If the game consequently runs without problems, you can use the Options Menu / Memory Use to re-activate all disabled features step-by-step.)
Possibly the error has been discovered and fixed by now: www.wolfmittag.com/docs/teudogar_whats_new.php lists all changes made since version 1.00, and all planned changes.
If the error you've discovered is listed there, simply download and install the latest Teudogar-version (www.wolfmittag.com/download). (For Full Versions you can find update patches at www.wolfmittag.com/download/updates.php.) (Of course, all of your saved games will remain available, and you can continue to use them.)
If 'Teudogar' doesn't run 100% perfect on you system, or if you've discovered any error or bug (program, text, dialogs, content, historical facts etc.), it'd be very kind if you'd give us a brief description via our contact form at www.wolfmittag.com/contact. Many thanks!
If we see a way of working around this bug with the existing version, we'll answer your mail with a description of what to do. Otherwise we will, if possible, fix the bug before we release the next program update.
At www.wolfmittag.com/docs?a=TEUD&rf=xe&L=en you'll find information on and solutions to all known problems.
You can consult us via www.wolfmittag.com/contact for advice. Please describe:
- What exactly happens? (or doesn't work)
- Does this error occur regularly? When exactly and under what circumstances?
- What did you do immediately before the error occurred, and what happened/what messages have appeared?
The more details you can give, the more likely we'll be able to help you.
Over the Options Menu (press the 'O'-key or F4 during the game) you can change numerous settings regarding language, graphics, scrolling, sound, music, volume level and much more.
Among other settings, you can change the game's language at any time. (Your saved games can be used with any language setting.)
If you don't want to see any violence, go to Options Menu (press 'O' or F4), Language and Control, and select 'Censorship Level: no violence'. (This deactivates duels, screams, blood, and mentioning of violent incidents in dialogue texts.)
If you don't want any nudity (e.g. during Berserk spell, or when you put off all of your clothes in the Inventory window), or mentioning of intimacy (rarely in very few dialogues), select 'Censorship Level: no sex' under Options / Language and Control. (For PCs with the Windows-country-setting 'United States', this is already the default setting.)
5.1. DEMO VERSION AND FULL VERSION.
This game exists in two versions:
- The DEMO VERSION has a limited game world, but it is free and may be freely passed on.
(download under www.wolfmittag.com/download, or from several other games- or Shareware- web sites.)
- The complete FULL VERSION can be played up to the end of the game's plot. It includes all places and people of the the game world, all chapters of the encyclopedia on Teutons and Romans, and a Walkthrough leading you through the game.
The Full Version is available only from the author, and it mustn't be copied or passed on. (It's not free because the development of this game has cost thousands of working hours and many thousands of euros and dollars.)
5.2 ORDERING THE FULL VERSION.
Delivery as a Download
The Full Version will be provided to you as a download. (It is not delivered physically on CDROM or likewise.)
